What’s more striking than a bright, opaque red lip against deep, gorgeous skin? If you have cool skin, go for a blue-based red. For warmer skin, an orangey red is a winner.

Goals: the brightest, spiciest, most neon-esque red ever. There’s a touch of orange in this red, so it leans warm.

Spicy: I describe this as a true red, with a little extra depth.

Apple Cider:  this deep red has a touch of blue-based berry and a more muted aesthetic than truer, brighter reds.

Bright pink is like red’s gigglier, younger sister who just wants to have fun…and happens to suit almost any skin tone. A bright fuschia, bubblegum, or hot rose shade pops against the deepest skin tones.

Bday Kisses: this shade really is a candy, Barbie, summer fun shade. It’s a bright pink with a neutral undertone (I can see blue AND orange tones in there or am I completely off the mark?).

Bragin Fruit: this, to me, is the most beautiful magenta shade as it has enough depth to make it ideal for all seasons. The blue-based undertone is stunning on cooler skin tones and is a perfect substitute for red. You could also wear this as more of a stain, pressed softly into the lips and topped with a balm.

No, it’s not rocket science nor is it lifesaving stuff, but it’s a little moment in your day that can bring some creativity, color, and cohesion. Here’s how to pick the right lipstick shade for your outfit!

What does your day hold?

Put aesthetics aside for a moment and consider what type of day is ahead. Are you rushing off to multiple meetings, each with coffee and pastries? In that case, a subtler shade with a forgiving formula is best. You don’t want to be chatting to the CEO while hoping like hell your bright red lippie hasn’t migrated to places it shouldn’t. Instead, a my-lips-but-better, a nude, or a subtle pink may be better. Plus, these shades go with almost any outfit color. You can quickly reapply without a mirror between appointments. 

Something like ‘Flutter’ can be pressed onto the lips and gently blended out with a finger. Done!  

On the flipside, you may be off for a long-awaited coffee date with a friend in the park on a beautiful day off work. Afterward, you’re getting groceries for a cocktail night at yours. You’re feeling fun and bright, with your favorite jeans and a relaxed cream linen shirt and ankle boots. Add color to match your mood and lift neutral colors. My current favorite is ‘Mykonos Mood’, the prettiest fuchsia.

What can you handle today?

Look, some lipsticks are just high maintenance. Even if your day is looking pretty chilled, you may not feel up to checking, reapplying, and maintaining a bold, dark, or bright lip. Creating a cohesive color palette is satisfying and gives the sense of real “put-togetherness”. A great way to do this is to match your lippie to a particular tone in your outfit. Create the perfect clash 

If your mood is a little more eclectic and rebellious, go for a clashing effect by pairing two opposing shades together. For example, let’s say you’ve chosen blue jeans, a navy blazer, and a white cami. Clash those blues by choosing a bright orange or tangerine lip. My pick would be ‘Crush’, the fizziest, most in-ya-face orange ever.

Juicy, Glossy Red 

Matte red is stunning, but it’s not so kind on very dry, chapped lips. Enjoy the classic allure of red with the juicy comfort of a gloss. Our go-to is always Chamoy, especially when we don’t have the time or patience for carefully applying matte lipstick. 

Wear with: a matte black wing or a smudged charcoal smokey upper lid 

Cool Mauve

Cool, mauve-toned brown is a fabulous choice if you can’t decide between nude, plum, or 90’s brown for the day. It’s got that grunge appeal without going full greige. 

Wear with: we love to pair Rome with fluffy falsies and an icy highlight. 

Deep Brick Nude

A brick-toned, reddish nude is one of the most flattering MLBB shades (depending on your skin tone). It adds warmth, depth, and fullness to the lips without making too much of a statement. We adore Enchanted when I want lush lips that won’t pull focus from my eyes. 

Wear with: absolutely anything! We love a classic satin base, natural blush, chocolate eyeliner, and a few coats of mascara. In fact, if  you’re short on blush, a teeny dab of brick lippie can make the perfect cheek color. 

Dark Coffee Brown

Let steaming mugs of hot chocolate inspire your lipstick choice and go for a deep, matte brown. Resting Brunch Face is stunning against tan-to-dark skin tones, and as a statement for more pale complexions. 

Wear with: a simple sculpted nude-brown eye and berry blush. 

Metallic Copper

Get creative this Winter and try a burnished copper shade with a gleam to rival Christmas lights. Glam AF gives you rich, gilded lips with enough neutral brown to avoid the “fancy dress” look. 

Wear with: a satin base, gold highlight, and matching copper shadow. Or, keep it simple with nothing but lashes and a little bronzer and blush to add warmth to the face. 

Creamy Mid-Toned Pink

There’s a pink for every season, and the loveliest shade for Winter is one that lifts your mood without teasing you with reminders of Summer. A creamy-textured, mid-toned pink like Flutter is perfect and can easily transition into Spring.

Deep Jewel-Toned Purple

Sheer Glitzy Gold 

The chilly season needn’t be all matte, opaque, and deep tones. Channel tinsel and glitter with a sheer gold gloss. This is a simple and easy way to dress your pout without worrying about smudging, fading, or drying. 

Wear with: a bronze-gold smokey eye and warmed-up cheeks with an apricot blush. 

True Ruby Red 

If in doubt, a true red will always save your makeup woes. No matter the occasion, a bold red always fits in. My new go-to is Mami, a creamy bullet lipstick that won’t suck the moisture from your lips.

Wear with: nothing but a little blush, some black pencil smudged into the upper lash line, and a few wispy falsies.  

Pumpkin Orange 

Orange is red’s cooler younger sibling, up for a party and gets along with everyone. A bright orange lip against bronzed skin and a gleaming gold highlight…chef’s kiss! Lean into the pumpkin spice madness with a shade like Let’s Make Out. 

Wear with: dewy skin warmed with burnished bronzer and a peachy-gold cream highlight. 

Christmas Tree Green 

I mean, there’s nothing wrong with being literal. Why not really wear the season on your sleeve (or lips), with a unique green matte lippie. It’s kinda punk, kinda kooky, and definitely cute. Liprechaun is the perfect fir tree emerald. 

Wear with: keep the rest of the look simple and clean with a flawless base, a little pink rouge on the cheeks, groomed brows, and lots of black or deep brown mascara. 

Here are some simple tips for rocking brown lipstick shades! 

Pick the right shade

When picking your brown lipstick shade, go a few shades darker than your skin tone to avoid any wash-out. In saying that, if you have dark skin, a few shades lighter can also be stunning for a 60s-style mod nude brown look. 

For warm-toned skin, pick shades with a little red or orange in them to bring out that warmth. For example, Wanna Spoon, Honeymoon, and Glam AF each have lovely warm, coppery undertones. 

Cool-toned skin would look incredible with a mauve-based brown like Rome. Cool and/or fair skin should avoid yellow-based browns to avoid looking sallow or sickly. Stick with pink or mauve-based brown such as Baile.  

Go for an ombre effect 

Brown lipsticks look amazing with an ombre-effect application. The transitional shades give extra dimension and avoid flatness. 

My favorite way to do this is to take a brown/nude liner a few shades deeper than my lips and fill my lips in. I do cheat a little and make my lip line a little fuller…that’s what it’s for, right? Then, I dab a brown lipstick color 2 or 3 shades lighter than the liner onto the center of my lips. With a brush or my ring finger, I blend the color out so it fuses seamlessly with the liner.  

Some perfect deep brown liners are Pecan Pie, Pudding, and Tiramisu (yum!).

Add a little life with a topper 

If you find that matte brown is washing you out even if the tone is right, try changing up the finish. Pick a gloss with a brownish tone, or even a glittery gloss and dab over your matte shade to add dimension, softness, and life. 

Hot-Tea and Santorini Sun are perfect candidates! 

Here are some practical tips for wearing dark lipstick shades. 

Dark lippie ideas: Ladies Night (deep wine), Furrari (almost-black brown!), Tacos 4 Life (deep brick-red), and Pumpkin Pie (deep orange, perfect for Fall). 

Pick your outline 

Dark colors create very definite lines and shapes, so it’s important to be precise. However, this doesn’t mean your liner needs to be sharp. Some dark lipsticks look amazing when applied with a more blended, softer line, especially with bullet lipsticks. 

If you’re going for sharp – do it right, with a liner, brush, and Q-tip to tidy any rough edges. For the blended look, use your finger and remember to blot thoroughly to create more of a stain than an opaque layer. 

Liner for longevity

If your dark lipstick is expected to stay on all day and look fabulous while doing so, give yourself some insurance with a longwear liner. Use the liner to create the shape and define the edge of the lip, then add your layer of dark lippie with a brush. 

Tip: apply the color in the center of the lips first, then use your finger or a brush to eke the color out toward the edge of the lips. 

Tidy the edges with concealer 

If your lip line is a little wonky, smudged, or uneven, use your concealer and a tiny brush to correct it. A little bit of full coverage concealer on a flat brush will help to define the shape and cover any mishaps! This is a great way to tidy your lip line without removing your base makeup as a q-tip soaked in makeup remover tends to do. 

Blot and apply another layer

To get the best of your bullet lipsticks, apply it in layers. Apply a thin layer, blot with a tissue, then apply another thin layer. This will ensure a longer wear and ensure a bolder color saturation without any streaks or “bunching” of excess product. 

Pinpoint conceal for a flawless base 

To achieve a fresh, clean, and polished look with a dark statement lip, use a full-coverage concealer and tiny brush to erase any redness or discoloration from the face. This will help to draw the eye where you want it, to the lips!

Deep, classic reds are always in style, no matter the season. However, I like to take my reds in a less expected direction in the Fall months with an almost neon red. The extra brightness adds more life to my tired complexion and even elevates dreary days. 

Our beloved new go-to is Tropical Vibes.

Sweet-tea nude

Nudes are always welcome in any season, but Fall ushers the craving for richer, deeper, more brown-leaning nudes. Go for a lippie a couple of shades deeper than your natural lip color and lean toward  mauve-brown undertones. 

We love, love, love Teddy Bear.

Berry-toned mauve 

Speaking of mauve, when fused with the juicy depths of berry, it brightens the face while remaining totally casual and everyday-friendly. I love this lip with a hazy, chocolate-brown eye and brown mascara. Take a small dab of berry-mauve lipstick and buff into the cheeks. 

Our hands-down favorite is Milan. 

Glossy red 

If you suffer from dry lips during Fall and Winter, matte lipsticks aren’t your pal. You can still get that glorious color by using a pigmented gloss. A glossy red foreshadows the festive season and gives your lips a maximised pout. Plus, no need for a mirror!

Soft pink 

You don’t need to abandon your nudes and pinks and swap them for berries and browns as soon as the leaves fall. A soft, romantic pink is glorious during Fall, especially with blushed pink cheeks and eyes rimmed with deep kohl.
