‘90s Makeup Trends to Revive

The ’90s are the new retro decade to be recreated in fashion currently. Slip dresses worn over t-shirts with combat boots, Mom jeans, and grunge plaid are seen time and again. But what about ’90s makeup? It was all about matte, flawless skin, the smoky and edgy eye looks, lip liner, pale lipstick, blue eyeshadow, and glitter.

Here are some ’90s makeup trends to revive! Use your lockdown time to experiment and play.

Dark Lip Liner and Shimmer Lipstick

Lipstick in the 90s was most often cool matte or metallic warm brown, as worn by Rachel from ‘Friends’, JLo, and Drew Barrymore. However, another key player in the lipstick game was dark liner with pale, shimmery lipstick. Pamela Anderson, Naomi Campbell, and Destiny’s Child favored this look, plumping out their already-lush lips.

Try it:

  • Start off with your go-to deep nude liner and very slightly over-line your lips, softening the line with a lip brush or clean, dense eyeshadow brush
  • Pop a paler pink or nude lipstick or creme onto the center of the lip and press it out to meet the liner with your finger
  • Lavi$h from the LiveGlam Cocoa Collection would be perfectly paired with a chocolate brown liner, with a little shimmery nude gloss on the center of the lip
  • Take your nude liner again and slightly fill in the outer corners of the lips to make them fuller and accentuate the pouty paleness of the center lip

Blue Eyeshadow

Blue eyeshadow with a smokey eye and red lips and matte skin was of the highest style in 90s makeup fashion. The brow bone was coated in super-frosty silvery shadow and the waterline was harshly-lined with black kohl. Classic. Yes, blue eyeshadow is back, but in a more cut-crease, Insta-glam kinda way.

Try it:

  • Take a shimmery blue cream eyeshadow stick and draw it over the mobile lid, smudging it out with your finger
  • Take an ultra-frosty silvery shadow or cream and press into your brow-bone (the more opaque, the better)

Draw navy or black pencil onto your tightline and waterline for a 90s/early-2000s smoky eye complete with spidery lashes.

Body Glitter

Chunky glitter suspended in gel, rubbed all over our bodies, faces, and in our hair.

Spectacular.

Try it:

  • Combine a blinding liquid highlight with your body moisturizer and rub into your decolletage and shoulders
  • Press makeup-grade fine glitter onto your cheekbones and the center of your lid at night
  • Pack your head full of glittery purple butterfly clips

Full-glam Nude Makeup

90s supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford had faces of angels as it was, but when they were made up by Kevyn Aucoin, their beauty was stratospheric.

Kevyn Aucoin was a champion of the 90s nude, heavily-applied, face-sculpting makeup with smoky cut creases, satin skin, killer cheekbones, and matte brown lips with deeper liner. Other Aucoin looks featured frosty eyes, glossy pink lips, and flushed cheeks. The skin was mostly matte or satin, and highlighter was applied to sculpt, not blind.

Try it:

  • Apply a hydrating moisturizer and primer to get the skin ready for all that paint
  • Lay down a full-coverage matte or satin foundation
  • Add a lighter, creamy concealer to the under-eyes, nose, and chin and blend in with a small brush or sponge
  • Add a skin-matching matte shade to the entire eyelid, then buff a deep taupe shade into the crease and lower lash line. LiveGlam’s Birthday Suit palette is perfect for this look.
  • Press a chocolate-brown pencil into the upper lash line and smudge in
  • Add plenty of mascara
  • Use a satin bronzer to carve the cheeks and warm up the hairline, temples, and under the jawline
  • Buff a rosy or brick-toned blush onto the cheeks
  • Draw a matte brown liner over the entire mouth and top with a creamy matte brown or nude lipstick to the center of the lips

Beauty Tricks to Master During Isolation https://liveglam.com/beauty-tricks-to-master-during-isolation/ https://liveglam.com/beauty-tricks-to-master-during-isolation/#respond Fri, 24 Apr 2020 20:00:59 +0000 https://liveglam.com/?p=10042096266

Beauty Tricks to Master During Isolation

When there’s nothing to do but stay home, it’s easy to run out of things to keep your hands and mind occupied. There’s only so much, cleaning, reading, binge-watching, phone scrolling, and “online exercise classing” we can do! This is a great time to lock yourself away in your bathroom and give yourself a makeup training session. Master the looks you struggle with or have been tempted to try, and get a handle on the basics for when we can finally go out and show off our skills in person.

No makeup makeup

This is a challenging look to truly nail. Raw Beauty Kristi on YouTube tried to recreate movie makeup with the aim of a flawless face with zero detectable makeup. Give it a try! You’re in for a whole lot of blending, color-matching, subtle shading, and restraint.

The perfect wing

The perfect winged eyeliner is the holy grail of makeup, as there are so many factors that can go wrong. Plus, the frustration of a smudged or wildly unmatched pair of wings is like no other.

Hooded-eye boys and girls check out Katie Jane Hughes on Instagram for the best way to create a winged eye that doesn’t crumple and become misshapen when you open your peepers.

Cut crease

The cut crease has swept the beauty community, concealer and all (in my opinion, you don’t need a concealer for a cut crease… don’t come for me!).

The cut crease adds beautiful depth to the eye and has been a go-to glam style for decades (see Marilyn Monroe and the earlier seasons of ‘Friends’ for inspiration). A smoked-out cut crease with plenty of lashes and a nude lip is one of the sexiest makeup looks ever, in my opinion.

Nikki Makeup is an incredible artist any makeup lover should follow. Her high-glam looks are flawless, and she has many examples of sharp-as-a-knife cut creases such as this one.

Summer skin

For many of you, Summer is approaching, which means fresh, glowy skin. You may be an old-hand at the “summer face” but if you’re not, now is a good time to become and expert.

Practice different bronzer and highlight placement to find your best summer complexion. This is a great way to get to know your own face and the way different shades, undertones, and placements can transform you.

My favorite makeup artist to turn to for bronzy, glowy, goddess-like summer skin is (once again) Nikki Makeup.

Perfect blush placement

Blush placement changes your look far more than you might think. A draped blush around the temples throws a high-fashion look, while color on the apples brings plump youthfulness. Have a play around with blush techniques to find your go-to, or new repertoire to pull out your sleeve once the world gets back to normal.

The absolutely delightful Wayne Goss has many short and extremely informative videos on everything, including blush technique.

Full glam camera contour

If you’re in the mood for a long, leisurely, and potentially disastrous makeup practice session, try a full face of camera-ready, sculpted glam. Play around reshaping your face using different contour and highlight shades, and achieve the perfect sleek smokey eye. Even if you won’t use this look “on the outside”, why not test your skills?

Jlo’s makeup artist, Scott Barnes, is the master of the full-face cover-up contour makeup. He demonstrates this on the lovely Tati Westbrook.

Note: sending love to everyone out there who is still working hard during isolation! We thank you. Love to all the Moms and Dads with kids at home, Moms-to-be who are anxious, and anyone spending this tough time alone.

Social-Distance Beauty Challenge Ideas

When it’s Saturday night during the lockdown and you’re missing your friends, get on the Zoom call and propose a makeup challenge party. No matter your skill level, make a game out of nailing certain looks or silly makeup challenges to pass the time.

It’s the perfect way to connect, have a giggle, get creative, and “get ready” even though ya ain’t goin nowhere.

Celebrity look-alike challenge

Either pick one celebrity for the whole group or nominate a different celebrity for each person. It could be super technical like changing your entire facial structure with contour to transform into the person, or a simpler task of copying the celebrity’s iconic makeup look.

Recreate an Instagram image

Scroll through Instagram makeup artists and pick the best, toughest, or craziest look and send the pick to the group. Everyone has to recreate it. The winner gets to pick the first activity you all do together once the lockdown is over.

Beauty challenges

One-color challenge

This one is simple, you have to create an entire look using one color. For example, it could be purple, and you have to use different shades of purple for everything from contour to lip liner. (Foundation and concealer can be normal).

3 product full face challenge

One person picks three products you all have to use to create a full face, NO other products allowed. For example, it could be blush, brown eyeliner, and concealer. Or contour, blue eyeshadow, and peach lipstick.

Recreate an era

Pick an era such as 1920s flapper, 1980s glam rock, or 1990s supermodel for everyone to recreate. Bonus tips for costume and accessories trawled from your respective wardrobes.

recreate an era makeup

2-minute full-face zoom party

Easy: create a full glam look in two minutes and see who has the best skills under pressure. You can add more instructions like, “it has to feature glitter”, or “it has to be matte skin with a glossy lip”.

Partner makeup challenge

Drag your boyfriend, girlfriend, Mom, Dad or anyone else you are isolating with and give them a makeover. Add themes, rules, and time limits to make it more interesting.

isolation makeup challenge

Even better…get your face done by someone who is absolutely clueless about makeup.

Internet Beauty Trends to Try During Isolation https://liveglam.com/internet-beauty-trends-to-try-during-isolation/ https://liveglam.com/internet-beauty-trends-to-try-during-isolation/#respond Fri, 17 Apr 2020 23:55:59 +0000 https://liveglam.com/?p=10042075187 Internet Beauty Trends to Try During Isolation

We’re living in a digital world now more than ever, so it’s only right that a ton of new trends, challenges, and hacks flood our timelines! You may be getting a bit overwhelmed, so we’re here to help you out. Check out a few of our favorite latest internet beauty trends to try out and add some fun to your isolation routine!

The #PillowChallenge

A pillow… but make it fashion. Originated by @stylebynelli, this is probably the easiest of all trends and takes very minimal effort. Just grab your favorite pillow, wrap a belt around your waist, add some accessories, and BAM, an iconic lewk for a scroll-stopping Instagram post!

#Passthebrush challenge

Grab your glam besties, that one makeup brush you have that isn’t dirty, and get ready to hit record! Do a funny before shot of your natural, beautiful self, rub the brush in the camera, and reveal the glam version of yourself. Warning: this does require a lot of coordination with your friends about which way to throw the brush. So be prepared for the group chat to blow up at all hours of the night.

Think of it as a personal isolation makeover! Not only is it a fun way to bring a community together, but it’s nice to get dressed up and feel like yourself again.

Mirror challenge

You’ve likely already taken pictures in every corner of your home and are running out of options. Switch it up with the mirror challenge! Lay a mirror on the ground, add some cute decorations around it, and snap a pic at your best angle. If you have a balcony or yard, this is a great picture to take on a sunny day with the sky as the background like @ashghotcakess!

TikTok beauty hacks

TikTok is full of beauty hacks, challenges, and makeup routines. One of the best hacks we’ve learned is from @snitchery, who has changed our selfie game forever.

Ever wonder why the way you look in the mirror isn’t coming across the same way in your selfie? Turns out using the front camera of our iPhone to take selfies distorts our features! Instead, hold the phone as far away as possible from your face and zoom in. Try it out and let us know if it steps up your selfie game!

Trendy Hairstyles to Wear This Year! https://liveglam.com/trendy-hairstyles-to-wear-this-year/ https://liveglam.com/trendy-hairstyles-to-wear-this-year/#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2020 23:56:09 +0000 https://liveglam.com/?p=10041897542 Trendy Hairstyles to Wear This Year!

New year, new ‘do. We all love getting dolled up every now and then (well for some of us, maybe everyday). But when it comes to going full-glam, it’s not just about how we do our makeup… there are also a ton of ways that we can get creative with our hair. Forget about the basic mermaid waves – here are 3 simple hairstyles to show everyone how trendy you can get!

1. Cluster of bobby pins

Bobby pins are incredibly versatile! They’re great for taming our baby hairs and you can stack a cluster of them into any section of your hair for a more glamorous effect.

Invest in a set of bobby pins with tons of bling, and bring them out whenever you’re feeling anything but low-key!

When you’re wearing your hair up or down, you can add a cluster of bobby pins into the front section of your hair to add some drama to your hairstyle. If you’re wearing your hair in a low ponytail, you can add a bunch of bobby pins into the area behind your ear.

2. French braid

Looking for a super cute hairstyle that doesn’t require much effort?

Use a curling iron to add waves into your hair, then run your fingers through the curls to loosen them up.

Next, separate the front section (that you’re going to braid) from the rest of your hair. Place your finger onto your part – about an inch or so from your hairline – then run your finger downwards towards your ear.

Tie the rest of your hair back loosely to separate the two sections. French braid the front section of your hair and pin it down with a couple bobby pins. Then untie the rest of your hair.

French braid… quoi? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick tutorial to guide you through it!

3. Snap clips

Are snap clips still a thing? Yes, they are!

Pop a couple snap clips into the front section of your hair for a simple but trendy hairstyle that works for practically any occasion.

When you’re wearing your hair up or down, or even tied back, you can place a couple snap clips either all on one side of your part or you can place one clip on each side.

What’s your go-to hairstyle for a night out? Let us know in the comments down below if you know any other cute looks that we should add onto this list!

Holiday Makeup Looks to Try

The holidays always call for a bold red lip or sparkly smokey eyes, but different holiday makeup trends are making their way under the mistletoe this year. This season we’ll be seeing lots of metallic makeup looks, icy pale blue eyeshadow and lots of iridescent looks! The best part about these holiday makeup ideas is that you’ll be able to rock these easy holiday makeup looks all year round. Go ahead and recreate your fave look… or all of them!

holiday makeup trends

Ornamental Eyes

There’s nothing more festive than applying iridescent shades on your lids that make your eyes pop like light hitting a glass ball ornament! Take any eyeshadow as your base and then apply any iridescent eye gloss all over your base. This holiday party makeup look is seriously one of our faves!

Icy Lids

Ice, ice baby! If you’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas (but there’s no snow in sight), let it snow on those lids and create this holiday eye makeup look! Take a pale icy blue and apply that shade all over your eyes. Keep the drama on your eyes by pairing this look with a nude lip!

The Classic Red Lip

There’s something about a bold, red lip around the holidays that just makes you want to jingle what your mama gave ya! We couldn’t leave the iconic red lip out of this list of looks for your festivities so swipe on your fave red lip and pair this with natural eyes or go all out with a sparkly smokey eye! A quick holiday makeup tip? Prep your lips and opt for a liquid lipstick formula so it lasts through all the Christmas cocktails 😉. Our “Sleigh My Name” KissMe lippie is perf for the occasion!

holiday inspired makeup

Metallic Red Lips

We love this look from head to mistletoe! Take the classic red lip and spruce it up by wearing a metallic lipstick like our “Vanity Furr” KissMe lippie. Pair your lip with natural shades on your lid but bring the heat by adding a shade (similar to your lip) on your lower lash line. This extra AF holiday makeup look will surely have you twerkin’ around the Christmas tree!

Twinkling Eyes

Give all the Christmas lights a run for their money with this twinkling rhinestone look! Euphoria-inspired looks with rhinestones quickly became an icon this year, so we loved seeing the trend be incorporated into the holiday glam trends. Grab our “You Better Swatch Out” palette to achieve a similar look and then just place some rhinestones on your eyes. Complete the look with a swipe of  “Flock Yeah” or “Plane Jane” and you’re ready for your family photos!

How to Change Your Hair Without Getting it Cut https://liveglam.com/how-to-change-your-hair-without-getting-it-cut/ https://liveglam.com/how-to-change-your-hair-without-getting-it-cut/#respond Thu, 07 Nov 2019 01:01:07 +0000 https://liveglam.com/?p=10038857530 How to Change Your Hair Without Getting it Cut

Want to change your hair look but don’t want/can’t afford/can’t be bothered getting a haircut or color? Same! It can be done…with accessories. Hair accessories aren’t just for 12-year olds. (Any 90’s kids out there who wore a million sparkling butterfly clips? The good days). Hair accessories are affordable, fun and completely temporary! No tears or regrets required. Plus, if you’re not a jewelry gal but you still want that sparkle, glam-up your hair.

Diamante, pearl and velvet head-bands

I adore headbands because they don’t pull or tug at my hair, they give that extra height on flat hair days, and they’re a great way to add sparkle to an otherwise boring day. They’re also great for greasy up-do hair days when you want to cover some of that uh…situation up there.  This is my top pick!

Pearl headbands

Styling idea: contrast a grungy tee, ripped jeans and ankle boots with a diamante-embellished velvet headband.

Embellished combs

I love hair combs, there’s something very vintage and romantic about them. I got thinking about hair combs when gazing at the beauty looks at the Tory Burch Spring 2020 show at NYFW. In fact, NYFW was full of exquisite hair accessory goodness…

How to Wear Embellished Combs

Combs are the perfect mix between super practical and achingly pretty. This one here is very expensive, but I had to include it because it’s so stunning, handmade and perfect for bridal-wear…or everyday at the office.

Styling idea: bridge the gap between hair up and hair down by pinning back the front-sides of your locks with combs, leaving the lengths free and flowing.

Pretty clips

Clips serve two main purposes: getting your hair out of your face or keeping shorter strands in place. And…they add color, sparkle and detail to your overall look.

How to Wear Hair Clips

Brand shout-out: Margherita is a brand which makes THE sweetest, cutest, prettiest hair accessories. (I may already have told you guys about them, but I’ll tell ya again!). They make shimmery, gleaming, often shell-inspired slides and clips. Perfect for girls and guys who love pale pastel tones and love to channel the ocean.

Scrunchies

Excuse me, 1995 called…okay, that’s too lame, I can’t even write the rest. But yes, scrunchies are back in a huge way, and I love it. They don’t pinch and pull, they’re soft and kind of whimsical and girly, and there’s a million different varieties out there. Scrunchies are a lifesaver because they don’t create that annoying hair tie kink in straight or wavy hair.

How to Wear Scrunchies

These Fall scrunchies are mega cute, and they’re handmade! I adore the green linen one.

Have fun loading your locks with prettiness!

“Contour your face for your face, not the way you see on every YouTube tutorial, because everyone has a different shape”.

One of the first tips RiRi sends our way is to contour for your face shape because everyone has a different facial structure– don’t mimic YouTube tutorials because chances are, you’re not contouring for your shape.

Blend your contour/bronzer into your hairline

I hate to see that line between your forehead and your hair; it should just blend in naturally”.

Separation lines are not Rihanna’s vibe, and we couldn’t relate more! Her trick? Blend that contour/bronzer into your hairline to avoid any kind of separation lines. If Rihanna does it, count us in!

Multi-tasking with your products

Besides being queen of unapologetic beauty, Rih is also queen of multi-tasking (who knew?). After swiping on some bronzer on the perimeters of her face, she took the same bronzer and applied it to her eyes to give them some warmth. She also took one of her pink shimmer blushes and applied it all over her lids! Talk about one and done 😉.

Cover eye bags with dark eyeshadow

“A day like today where I’ve barely had any sleep, I’m gonna get all those little bags right there”

Running on no sleep but you’re still trying to look (almost) as good as Rihanna? Cover those bags up with some dark eyeshadow– we’re trying to fix our inner issues with a bad bi*** dark eyeshadow (would it be a proper Rihanna blog post if we didn’t try to sneak some lyrics in?)! Rih also adds a pop on highlight to her inner corners for some extra zest or oomph, as she says.

Don’t be afraid of the glow

“I think the key to highlighter is not being afraid of it… I could get really carried away when it comes to highlight. I really could”

What’s the key to Rihanna’s glow-up? Shining bright like a diamond! Rih likes layering different highlighters to get that multidimensional glow. She applies 3 highlighters in the 10-min video (same, sis), and shared that it’s important to blend and to make sure the colors flow together! She then finished up by applying an iridescent lip gloss (P.S. our “Yachtie” gloss is a damn good iridescent gloss if you want to go for the same vibe!).

Experiment with body glow

I would sit there and make body glitter makeup with like, oil and eyeshadows that I crushed up, pigments, and I would just blend it all together to make this nice little glowy thing”

Rih gives us a little background on how she was inspired on her “Body Lava” and we’re living and breathing for the tips she gave. Mix a little bit of eyeshadow with body oil to create your own body glow!
